Ink Review: Document Ink - Blue by De Atramentis

An overview of the inks within this review series is available here. As blues go, the shade of this one is quite nice and the nib feels well lubricated as it moves across the paper. Pen cleaning was quite easy but this ink has an Achilles heal, it bleeds, man does it bleed. This is the first review where I felt that I would be doing my readers a disservice if I didn't show the backside of the writing sample on Rhodia. It's not bad but it is an issue.

The only colour is the blue pigment.

The Noodler's Polar Blue shown above has bulletproof properties similar to the Document Ink. The J. Herbin is similar in colour only.

Conclusions

I was really enjoying this ink until I turned the page over and saw the bleed through. It is not hard to find blue inks that are water resistant, many with more interesting properties than this one. Waterproof blue inks aren't quite as prevalent. If you have decided that you will be making custom colours by mixing the inks in the Document Ink line then you should buy a bottle. If you are just looking for an ink that can live through a spilled Double-double then I would look for something that didn't bleed as badly as this one.

I reached out to Goulet Pens and asked if they would be willing to supply samples of the complete line of De Atramentis Document Inks. While they were out of stock in the Black and Brown variants, they kindly provided samples of the rest of this line to me free of charge. I do not feel that my opinions of this ink have been affected by receiving the sample free of charge.
