Ink Review: Jentle Oku-Yama by Sailor

An overview of the inks within this review series is available here. Oku-Yama is the second of two inks that make up the fall inks in the Four Seasons series. It is a lovely cranberry red colour that is very similar to the discontinued Grenade.

Ink Properties

Shading: Shading from cranberry through wine on ink resistant papers.
Bleed Through: This ink bleeds through on Copy paper but Field Notes and Rhodia fair just fine. I am sceptical of the Field Notes results because of the extended dry times, I'm wondering whether this particular sheet of Field Notes got slightly different treatment when the lines were printed on it. 25 seconds dry time on Field Notes is not the norm.
Show Through: The back side of Copy paper is unusable, Rhodia and Field Notes would be just fine for use.
Saturation: Highly saturated.
Sheen: Metalic green-gold where the ink pools on ink resistant papers.
Water Resistance: Some water resistance but it is arguable whether it is of any use.
Drying Time: Long dry time, 35 seconds using an EF nib on Rhodia. Dry time is almost instant on Copy Paper.
Flow: Average flow. Higher than average lubrication.
Cleaning: More involved than average but not arduous.

I can't tell any difference between these two in use. I feel pretty confident in saying that they are wholly interchangeable. If you were sad that you missed the boat for Grenade, don't be, just go and buy Oku-Yama. Same stuff, just 50% more expensive.

Conclusions

Grenade is one of my favourite reds. When I heard it was being discontinued I went out and bought a second bottle. I doubt that I'll ever run out now but if I did, I would purchase Oku-Yama in a heartbeat. Great ink. Great colour.
