Ink Review: 1864 Blue Black by Diamine

An overview of the inks within this review series is available here. This ink is surprisingly dark for a blue black. When I saw the initial ink swab I thought that it wouldn't appeal but it didn't take long to grow on me. This would be great in an office environment where it is taken as black on first glance and then the blue catches your eye and draws you in.

Ink Properties

Shading: The saturated nature of this ink kept shading to a minimum, some can be found when using wider nibs but you certainly wouldn't choose this ink for its shading properties.
Bleed Through: Both Copy paper and Field Notes experience bleeding. As usual, Rhodia fairs quite well. Copy paper and Field Notes also experience feathering which is disappointing.
Show Through: Neither Copy paper nor Field Notes have back sides that are suitable for use, the backside of Rhodia is just fine however.
Saturation: Highly saturated.
Sheen: None.
Water Resistance: This ink has no water resistance.
Drying Time: Very long, 35 seconds using an EF nib on Rhodia. On absorbent papers drying time is only 5 seconds using an EF nib.
Flow: Average flow. Average lubrication.
Cleaning: Yet to be determined. Will update.

A band of dark indigo backed by a light pink. I was surprised, I was expecting a grey component.

Conclusions

While this ink seems to be a bit picky about its use on cheap paper, I find myself drawn to its unique colour. I don't have anything in my collection that is similar and the blue that is so dark that it is almost black really grabs me. I have a large sample of this on hand so I don't need to choose today whether a bottle is in my future but I certainly haven't excluded the possibility.

I reached out to Diamine and asked if they would be willing to supply samples of the complete line of the 150th Anniversary inks. I do not feel that my opinions of this ink have been affected by receiving the sample free of charge.
