Ink Review: Frankfurt by SUPER5 iNK

An overview of the inks within this review series is available here. I don't use a lot of grey inks, but those that I do use have to be dark. Super5 iNK Frankfurt is just dark enough to make it over this use threshold. While the ink is definitely grey, there is also a hint of brown in it to warm it up. This brown is quite evident because it falls out of suspension in the ink and has to be shaken up. I loaded this ink in a Lamy Vista and set it aside for the better part of a week, when I returned to use it, the rust-brown pigment could be seen on the inner surface of the section where the feed is. Very odd.

Ink Properties

Shading: This ink has nice shading down to medium nibs, finer than that and the shading is much less pronounced.
Bleed Through: Copy paper shows spot bleeding for all nib sizes. Field Notes and Rhodia show no ill effects.
Show Through: Depending on the preference of the writer, the back side of Copy paper would likely be considered unusable but Field Notes and Rhodia are perfectly usable.
Saturation: Average saturation.
Sheen: None.
Water Resistance: 100% waterproof.
Drying Time: A little slower than average dry time, 25 seconds using an EF nib on Rhodia.
Flow: Average flow. Better than average lubrication.
Cleaning: Cleaning was incredibly easy.

The bulk of the ink is made up of a fog grey. Brown-grey can be seen where the the ink sample was applied to the wicking media.

Similar Inks

I have a couple of other dark greys that have reasonable water resistance. I have shown writing samples of these inks below.

Conclusions

As I said above, grey inks only make a minor appearance in my writing. I have hired Montblanc Permanent Grey for my go to grey ink and the difference in water resistance of this ink is not a big enough reason to give up my Montblanc. If you don't have a permanent grey in your stash, this one will do the job admirably but I have a hard time getting excited over grey ink.
